Blue Johanni Cichlid
They are very similar to but a distinct species from pseudotropheus cyaneorhabdos formerly melanochromis maingano.
Blue johanni cichlid. In the aquarium trade the fish is known as the bluegray mbuna or the electric blue johanni. The species is popular in the fishkeeping hobby and is frequently kept in cichlid aquariums. The male of this species is also very similar in appearance to its close relative the maingano melanochromis cyaneorhabdos and these two mbuna species can easily be confused.
The maingano is sometimes called the electric blue as well which adds to the confusion but it is a separate and distinct species. They are classified as pseudotropheus johannii formerly melanochromis johannii. Females and juveniles are yellow.
Melanochromis johanni has a variable color pattern. The species is highly sexually dimorphic. It is a hap and so one of the more peaceful open water swimmers.
They should be fed a variety of meaty food items such as live frozen or freeze dried bloodworms brine shrimp mysis shrimp and ghost shrimp preferably gut loaded as well as high quality vitamin enriched spirulina based pellets and flakes. Johannii is known by are johanni cichlid blue johanni bluegray mbuna and blue mbuna. Electric blue johannii are omnivorous and mainly eat aufwuchs and small invertebrates in the wild.
Juveniles are generally a yellow in color but this can vary in intensity from location to location in the wild. Females are brilliant yellow orange in color. Johanni are african cichlids originating in lake malawi.
