Saltwater Feather Duster
How common to this area these are one of the few things we import from the dr.
Saltwater feather duster. It is very intolerant of copper based medications. It seems to me they do have the red lines on the feathers indicating that. Feather dusters are commonly found living in the nooks and crannies of live rock and coral reefs.
Since the feather duster worm is a substrate attached filter feeder it won t be able to find its own meals so you have to bring dinner to them by adding direct dose feeding. So it might not be out much. It needs to be housed in a well established reef system as it is dependent upon plankton for its diet.
Hey everyone do you think these are feather dusters. They re definitely coming from the white tubes on the rock. The feather dusters belong to the class polychaeta one of the four classes of annelids.
The feather duster is actually a sedentary worm that forms its casing and extends a crown of tentacles perfect for grasping small particles and free floating debris. They then have a feathery crown that peeks out filtering the water column for food using its specialized tentacles. They trap food floating by with its feathers and pulls the food into its mouth where it can be ingested and then digested.
The feather duster sabellastarte giganteus also known as the fan worm is a marine segmented worm that attaches its calcium carbonate tube to a rocky or sandy substrate by its base. Recently my alveopora coral died after alk spike. The worm lives inside this protective tube.
The polychaetes literally many hairs have segmented bodies and each segment bears two or more appendages called parapodia. The feather duster shell is not as transparent and is usually white from what i ve seen. Size usually about 2 feather and the tube is about 5 6.
To me they look like it but just confirming. In contrast this is semi transparent pink color. Feather duster worms are members of the phylum annelida the segmented worms which includes the common earthworm.
The feather duster is usually found in the coral rubble at the base of the reef aquarium with some of the rubble being incorporated into its parchment like tube.
