Have a good number of large severums geophagus and other american cichlids in my 125 gallon aquarium.

Severums. The largest being 8 9 inches heros severum. The severum is occasionally territorial but only aggressive when defending a breeding site or young fry. A gold variety is also available.

Severums darkening for short periods of time is usually a consequence of a temporary mood rather than a serious problem. They have stunning bands on their scales that make them look more attractive. It could mean your fish is in distress.

The most common severums are the golden severum green severum and red spotted severum with the golden one developed from green severums. Severum have an iridescent sheen to their scales and off white to gold background color. The gold severum is a trusting fish and will often accept food directly from their owner s hand.

Severum are found in calm deeper slower moving rivers and tributaries as well as tannin stained floodplain lakes usually around submerged branches and tree roots. As such sight aquarium mistakes will do no harm. Since they are hardy they tend to tolerate slight water changes. These fish are also known to eat fruits which fall in the waters they inhabit. However if the fish stays very dark for extended periods of time then it could be an indicator of something you need to address.

They add pomp and color to your tank achieving that aesthetic touch complemented by live plants and tank mates. The severum is also known as the banded cichlid. Red spotted severums are vivid fish that any hobbyist should introduce to his her aquarium.

All severum cichlid s fall under the genus heros these fish are native to south america. Although the severum will adapt well to hard water over a longer period it will do much better in soft medium water.
