Rather than the pure white being preferred over all else the proper head pattern is determined by the pattern of the red and blue on the body of the koi. Asagi have blue net like reticulated pattern across the back. Shusui meaning autumn water in japanese are the doitsu or mirror scaled cousin of the asagi koi.

The shusui is a non metallic blue koi with hi red orange below the lateral line rising to the cheeks and also appearing in the pectoral fins. Shusui are doitsu german koi where the blue scaleless skin replaces the asagi s scaled net pattern. At first sight these mirror scaled koi seem to have little in common with asagi but shusui are actually the product of crossing asagi with a german mirror carp in 1910 by yoshigoro akiyama resulting in the very first doitsu scaled koi breed.

The blue reticulated net pattern seen in asagi is replaced with icy blue or sky blue scaleless skin and a single row of scales running down the dorsal line of the body. Shusui have been crossbred between doitsu koi and asagi and their points for appreciation therefore are basically the same as those for asagi.
