Blennies are often confused with gobies but there is an easy way to tell the difference. Gobies have two distinct dorsal fins blennies have a single dorsal fin that runs the length of their body.

The two groups look very similar but they also present some differences. A simple way to distinguish blennies from gobies is by noting their single long continuous dorsal fins but to identify individuals to a species level often a photograph may be necessary. They are both groups that display considerable diversity in terms of size. Gobies comprise the largest known family of tropical fishes.
